Rainforest in BrazilWe’ve all heard about the environmental disaster that is gripping the world and bringing it to its knees. But what about that other disaster that is taking place inside us in that mysterious, unquantifiable, inner environment – our spirit, our consciousness?

Because for every poisoned sea and ripped down forest around us in this world, there is a spiritual equivalent here within us, in this land of our imagination. Think about it – what happened to that innocent little creature you were when you were born, who seemed to know itself, that was happy in the moment? How has it changed? Haven’t our inner worlds transformed in parallel with the world around us? Who amongst us is still happy? Who amongst us even believes in the simple happiness of just being alive?

And what about these thoughts that choke up our inner skies as surely as any CO2-emitting chimney – that harangue us endlessly with guilt trips, anger, self-glory, alternating with self-loathing and a string of endless and insatiable desires? What about these lusts that break our societies and our families apart, and in the process our children’s hearts until, like us, they too are filled up with yet more pain and insecurity?

We can see the world around us as it suffers, we hear about the flora and fauna that are being destroyed in our wake and we are spurred on to try to curb our wanton consumption of life in the hope that the cycle can be reversed. But how can we hope to bring a balm of peace to this world when our hearts are swamped in toxins, our guts have been mined with unfillable pits of greed, our inner skies are choked by the smoking factories of our mind and our innocent desires are fanned into fierce fires that consume the brushwood of our morality?

Yes, let’s try to save the world! But as we do, let us remember what we are saving this world from. We are saving this world from ourselves, nothing more. We are saving the world from what we have become.

And if we really want to make a difference, then the struggle must be a twofold struggle – both an outer and an inner one. A simultaneous battle to save the animals of the Brazilian rainforests and also the bare-footed angels that live in our hearts. We’re fighting the Environmental disaster but we should not forget about the IN-vironmental disaster that is the root of all our present ills.

The whole human race should take to Kundalini awakening because it will assist us not only in sorting out our immediate health and family problems, but also in resolving global problems. There is only this power and mechanism within us that works out things for our individual benevolence, auspiciously and equitably.

At the moment we are not in control of many aspects of our lives. We are at the mercy of technology. That technology we collectively created now sits on our heads like tonnes of bricks. Entire economies of countries are run by it. Our attention is completely tied up with wrestling with the monster. You will be able to relate to what I mean if you’ve found yourself waiting, for example, on-line to be served by an internet service provider, a bank, a government department or a telephone company.

The bank and government departments come under the area of the Nabhi Chakra, the sustenance and satisfaction aspect of our well-being. The internet and telephone come under the Vishuddhi Chakra, the communication and collective consciousness-awareness aspect of our well-being. By handing over these two vital components of our well-being to technology, we are now running inside an invisible landscape of the mind. This mental realm is totally unreal. It is made up of what we Think. It is devoid of the realities that go with living. There is no way out of this complicated maze except via our Kundalini as She is beyond the maze. She is the All-pervading Power of God’s Love who is all knowledge, all know-how.

Within Kundalini are the many aspects of our being: these are our chakras and nadis (channels). We need to have the Kundalini flowing through them so that Her profound knowledge, Her know-how, can become ours. We can then use this knowledge to re-evaluate what we are doing.

The human form is made up of mental, emotional and physical bodies within the five sheaths. Currently, we are running with the mental body way out in front, and the emotional and physical bodies lagging far behind. They are out of alignment with each other. The five sheaths, reflected within us as our five senses, are in total confusion. This is the stress factor.

The enlightening effects of the Kundalini which triggers the light of the Atma/Sprit to shine in our attention, provides the only solution for us. As individuals make up the collective, it is at the individual level that we must first work things out.

The tremendous healing powers of the Kundalini are there to be used by us. We need to obtain our Self-realisation. Sahaja Yoga is the method, devised by Shri Mataji, which allows ordinary individuals to become enlightened. During the process of Self-realisation, the Kundalini rises from Her abode in the triangular Sacrum bone and pours Her rays of love onto our chakras, threading them like pearls; onto the nadis, drawing them back into alignment; and onto the five sheaths, purifying and soothing them down. In this way, the mind, the emotions and the physical body are restored to their equilibrium.

Mesopotamanian Tree of LifeWe need to be in equilibrium to stop what we are doing and change how we are doing things. The human race has run aground in all areas of endeavour by becoming too top-heavy, with the roots withered. Connection to the Kundalini restores the mechanism within us, allowing the roots to become reconnected to the “tree”. The sap – the love that nurtures – can then be redistributed more evenly throughout the various parts, producing a much more beautiful, balanced, healthy and vital tree.

The subtle system in Sahaja Yoga is made up of the chakras and nadis, and is the Tree of Life. Many saints, poets, authors, artists, craftsmen and craftswomen have portrayed it in their works. The Kundalini is the sap that flows, nourishing, sustaining and evolving.

We can take the vital lines of communication and technology that our lives are bound up with to a new level where our well-being is, once more, the centre of consideration. This can only happen if we obtain our Self-realisation.

Mooladhara, four-petalled Chakra in Sahaja YogaThe Mooladhara Chakra is placed at the very base of the spinal column. It has an important role as support for both the subtle body system and Kundalini, and so it is closely related to balance and stability. The Mooladhara Chakra is placed below the Mooladhara which houses the Kundalini. It is the foundation of the psyche, where it is grounded and supports the other centres. Any strong disturbance to its sensitivity throws the individual off-balance and causes mental disturbance.

The qualities of the Mooladhara Chakra are innocence and wisdom and eternal childhood. To awaken these you can use the affirmation, “Mother, please make me the innocence.”

The Mooladhara Chakra is the seat of our grounding force, our connection with Mother Earth. It is made of the Earth element and represents the beginning and primary principle of Life.

In the beginning, gross matter was created using the four-petalled Carbon atom as the first building block. Like Carbon this chakra has four petals, a stable configuration. The Earth is our vehicle for Life and is innocent in this role. She does not judge – matter simply is and supports. In the same way the innocence of a child simply is, without thinking, judgement or concern, and this quality is in concert with the innate pure wisdom of a child. Children often see and speak clearly. “From the mouth of babes”.

When this chakra is awakened its magnetic force starts working. A person whose Mooladhara Chakra is awakened has an inner sense of stability and direction. The qualities of this chakra are those of innocence, wisdom, purity and eternal childhood. These qualities are naturally inherent within each being, but we can through various practices damage this centre. This is the centre that governs the retention, elimination and sexual aspects of human beings.

An awakened and lively Mooladhara chakra brings forth spontaneous wisdom, innocence, dedication, purity and joy. Such a personality is auspicious, and contributes good fortune to his or her surroundings.

The presiding deity or personification of the Mooladhara chakra is Shri Ganesha, the child with the head of an elephant. He is innocent and helps us to remove obstacles in our way.

Clearing the chakras in the Subtle System is an important part of Sahaja Yoga. Sitting on Mother Earth is a very simple technique for clearing the Mooladhara Chakra. If you wish to find out more ways of clearing the chakras, you are very welcome to come to any of the Sahaja Yoga programs held throughout Australia. Please see the main website, www.sahajayoga.com.au, for details about meeting places and times.
